Slaughterama 7 Bikes, Bruises, and Booze

Once again I applaud the cutthroats on putting together another amazing Slaughterama. We played hard, we drank hard, we hurt hard. None of us harder that Ian who after taking a poorly cushioned Jousting pole to the head bled like a sieve, threatened to beat down the whole of Belle Isle, and then during a 6 hour stay in the E.R. Managed to make friends or enemies (it was hard to tell) with an old lady claiming to be crazy as a loon, A pregnant woman who only spoke spanish in which he felt the necessary word to repeat was punta, and every other sick and bleeding person.

The events of the Weekend were fun as hell but at the same time about 3 times as many people showed up making it hard to rock our freak bikes they way they needed to be rocked. It was also a little disturbing as a drum circle began to infiltrate the playing field. But we still jousted, whiplashed, and 6 pack attacked like nobodies business. Great times with more to come. I just hope we can get just as buck wild foor Bury Your Bike.

So a few years ago a miss Amalie Remsen decided to pass out some fliers that suggested everyone grab their bikes and meet up at midnight for a rolling party around downtown. To no ones suprise it was awesome and people kept showing up each Thursday night for bike debauchery. Unfortunately when the cold winds begin to blow people decide to stay at the bar, watch T.V. or god forbid get a full nights sleep rather than taking advantage of the asphalt playground of Downtown. Now I can understand this hell I've decided to catch up on the latest episode of lost instead of riding in 28 degrees, but ladies and gents guess what the cold is gone and I think the people are ready to ride again. So, if you feel the urge which I know you do Come on up to the Cummer museum parking lot. WE roll at teh strike of 12:15 and we go till everyone has found their favorite pub for last call or hell maybe till the sun comes up.

Zombie Bikes has been in transition mode. About a month ago we found out that we lost the old BBB complex. Throughout a couple weeks of frantic searching Burro Bags and Royal Treatment records found a radd new location at the letter shop on Forsyth st. and Zombie is now rocking the corner of 1st and main in the back of the old Earl Horne janitorial supply building. This space is amazing and we look forward to putting on some wild events. Right now were getting reorganized but were hoping to have some regular hours up by the start of next month. Thanks to the efforts of our latest Zombie Bikes volunteer Albie the shop is cleaner and more organized than ever. With this rejuvenation were making a few changes. First off were trying to get things a little tighter so were cutting back on days so that we can be sure that we can be there when we say we will. So our new hours will be 1-5 saturdays and sunday. Next we need more volunteers so that we can be openon more days again. We are looking for anyone who digs bikes and is willing to come out and help others with their bikes. If your interested come in during our hours and we will show you how it's done. Oh yeah thank you to everyone that voted for us as Folio weeklys best bike shop.

Bury Your Bike 2

So, we pulled it off. Bury Your Bike 2 was a blast and we want to thank everyone for participating.

For those who didn't get a chance to make it out here is a quick rundown.

Friday was a great start, we had an awesome turn out for the Critical mass. Cruising through Downtown and into Riverside, claiming the five points light and the rest of Jax. From Riverside we rolled over to the Spiral where the forty foot beer bong and Talk Sick Earth awaited. After an amazing hour of rocking out and a few games of foot down the procession ended at Shantytown for an epic Bike Pile and bands, bands, bands.

Saturday is when things really got rolling six pack attack, zombie hunt, Bangarang. When the sun went down things got crazy. For everyone that Hopped onto a tall bike for jousting, Your the Shit. Some got bloody most got hurt everyone had fun, then we danced through the night to the likes of Heavy Flow, and Biking Viking.

Sunday closed out with a few rounds of Polo and some BBQ over at Shanty.

This was a blast for us up at Zombie we hope everyone that made it had as much fun as we did. IF you missed it don't worry we will be back next next year and before then there will be many fun gatherings.

Bury Your Bike II is coming up fast!! As in two weekends!!

also, there's two good bike forums up and running that art jacksonville centric.

One has only recently been started by a couple of UNF kids. Their purpose is to network with other bikers in the area, and to get some good rides and maybe in and out of town events happening. I think this is great as we know all too well that kids on bikes get bad reps. Especially, by people who are quick to label every person on a fixed gear a hipster or some kind of elitist. This can be rather infuriating, when really how does it matter? People. are. biking. How can you hate on somebody who is out there getting exercising and doing something that they love? How does it affect you if one person wants to nail down a trick while another wants to build the biggest fucking tall bike of all time?

second, this Saturday marks the start of the Riverside Arts Market. With the beginning of this weekly cultural amazingness, BikeJax will be hosting a bike valet service, check out what he's got planned here.

Then, Sunday we're going to have a litte bar-b-que for all of us who weren't able to attend Slaugterama this year (which by the way, wish good times on the kids that are reppin' us in Richmond this weekend). But come out Sunday afternoon from 2o'clock and on we'll be cooking some delic food and playing bike polo.

If you can't make it Sunday for polo, we'll be having our second beginner night Tuesday startin' at 7.

And then--oh my so many events this week--we'll be having a movie night Wednesday featuring the Triplets of Belleville. Movie starts at 8:30, come earlier for an open workshop 6:30 to movie time.

SUPER FUN FEST

Sunday was the third women's ride, and quite possibly the best. We spent an hour cruising around avondale and riverside, and with such beautiful weather how could we not have a blast?? I'm not sure of our number this time, 20+/- (which included a group of amazing, supportive guys), but with such a mass we took over the main lane and while jacksonville has not, as of yet, been able to sustain a Critical Mass bike ride on a regular basis, I dare say we might have made an entrance. There was plenty of waving by pedestrians and other bikers as we became traffic.

I also want to take a chance to mention a semi-big event that is coming up pretty fast. For those unaware, I'm afraid there won't be a tangerine fest. With phillip the main driving force behind such an amazing event, no one has been able to quite step forward and fill the shoes he left behind.

HOWEVER, there will be a fest. Not quite a tangerine fest, but a community gathering none the less. March 21st will be the unveiling of the new Super Fun Fest. Super Fun Fest is an idea from a wide array of kids and will involve a bunch of people getting together and throwing everything we got into a bunch of free fun. There will be a Supercat Alleycat and there will also be a ton of workshops and free food, art and games.

Maybe its a couple books, that blazer you never really fit into or a blender that you used back when you were on some smoothie diet. Whatever. You bring these extra things and we'll have booths set up where you can deposit what you don't need, and then peruse the other booths for things you might need. A huge swap of sorts! A lot of fun, and something everyone can get involve in!

we want a LOT of free food. We're talking a banquet. So if you've ever wanted to do food not bombs or cook with a bunch of people.. hit. us. up. We'll be raising money for cooking necessities with a couple bake sales at UNF, and then try to hit up hardcore for donated food.

Kid Workshops, LLC/Funds and 2/11 Workshop

As you might of heard from over at BikeJax and JaxScen e, the Zombie Kids workshop went over really well at the downtown public library. Check out killer pics here (thanks Jenny!). While we may not be able to make it a monthly thing, we will be working on kids-friendly afternon workshops during the week at Zombie. Tentative day for this will be Tuesday, but give us a week for complete confirmation on that. Also, we had one of the adults come up to us afterwards and mentioned a boy scout troop coming by. This is an excellent idea! If anyone who reads this is friendly with local boy and girl scout groups (particularly Springfield-centric ones), please get them in contact with us!

For awhile Zombie Bikes has operated under the business liscenses of BBB's record shop and Quick Release Messenging. However, now that we've been doing more workshops and public events, its high time that we register under our own name. We'll be sending in our paperwork as an LLC the first of next week. Unfortunately, this is a little more than we predicted (125-155+), and will consume most of our savings. Sooooo if you have a bike in need of repair, we REALLY want you to come in soon! OR we are also interested in mirroring a certain SOPO fundraiser. We build you, or an interested business you know of, a home-made, Zombie Bikes original, welded-to-perfection bike rack. Not only will we do the welding, but also the installing for a mere $150+/- (we'll do more supply investigation). So tell me, where do YOU want to see a bike rack??

Finally, upcoming events:
Zombie Zines will be making an appearance at First Friday, tomorrow evening, in front of SteamWorks.

The next workshop/movie night is this upcoming Wednesday. We'll be showing the movie Breaking Away, a coming-of-age film about a cycling-obsessed teen and his trials and tribulations with life after graduation.

Sunday, 15th will be the next Women's Ride, and will get a bigger post closer to the date.. but mark your calendars now!

ATLANTAAAA part one

This past weekend SoPo of Atlanta hosted the very first southeast Bike!Bike! SoPo estimates about 65 people came this past weekend, representing 22 community bike repair shops and projects. And of course, yours truely made sure the 904 got repped.

Bike!Bike! is about workshops, it's about meeting people and networking, it's about sharing and disseminating different methods of doing things and the thoughts behind them. Perhaps the most beautiful thing was seeing how each of us are interacting within our own community, how we grasp the idea that different cities have different local needs, and how we all act to connect, understand and meet those needs. I realized just how much Zombie Bikes is very different than other bicycle co-ops, and yet still slightly the same. There are things we are doing well, and things we need to work on.

A big flaw at Zombie is the way we take in bikes. Often bikes taken in for repair aren't adequetly marked as to what needs to be fixed. There are some reasons for this, sometimes its not a specific Zombie volunteer who takes in the bike, sometimes we think we might get to it the day it comes in, sometimes we're just lazy, etc. There was some awesome paperwork available at the conference we hope might guide us in this organizational arena. Other times, when a person brings in a bike for repair we are sometimes too quick to just fix it, instead of aiding the person to pick up a wrench and fix it themselves. Perhaps we need to re-look at the way we present Zombie.

Another shortcoming we have compared to a number of co-ops is our focus on youth inclusion, particularily the neighborhood youth. New Orleans' RUBARB co-op is doing amazing things with the children in their area, and were able to give us a great youth packet. While our shop might never be young kid-friendly, there's no reason we can't push for high school youth days one or two afternoons a week. Joe's excited about this and has already organized our group for a library trip this weekend. But maybe we should also start talking about ways to talk with Springfield-centric public schools about promoting bikes, and talking to more neighborhood kids.

There's more to comment on, but this is going to be a two-parter.

Wednesday Workshop and Movie Greatness

ahhhhh so don't forget, tomorrow will be the second January bicycle workshop. It will be an open workshop and there should be at least three Zombie volunteers, we're hoping for five, facilitating your every bike questions. We want these workshops to help you to become more familiar with bicycle mechanics and to give a tangible pathway for wannabe volunteers to become actual volunteers.

the workshop will last from 5:30-7:30, come early or come late, just come.

The movie will begin at 8:30, and because it's so nice out we will be showing this one on the Zombie's outside wall. This week's pick is Bomb It!, a global graffiti documentary showcasing not only different artists but the evolution of different styles.

Lastly, I will be posting a recap on Atlanta's Bike! Bike! weekend, as soon as I have some semblance of coherent thought.

Sorry about the procrastination, but I finally have some Women's Ride II pictures up here. Again, huge thanks to everyone who supported and/or came out! The next ride will most likely be Feb. 15th, but may change depending on a certain out of town trip.

I'm afraid this weekend might be kind of dead at Zombie Bikes. Joe and Cherri will be heading out to Bike! Bike! in Atlanta (this event brings together bike co-op members around the southeast and provides think-tanks and workshops galore). Brandon's going to Gainesville to interview with a certain bike builder, so wish him the best of luck!
However, Bert ought to be at the shop Sunday afternoon, so if you do find yourself in the need of a little Zombie affection stop by then! Also, we have a new regular volunteer, Mark, who'll be doing Wednesdays and some Saturday afternoons, and a somewhat-new, semi-regular volunteer, Davey.

Week Recap and Midnight Mass Anniversary

We've had a great turnout this past week at our various events, and we owe some thanks. A huge thank-you to everyone who came out to Sunday afternoon's Women's Ride, including those who came just to see us off in support. We had a group of 28/30 women, sporting everything from tricked out cruisers to road bikes. At first I thought the rain might affect our turnout, but after drinks at Starlight, the clouds cleared for a great day. We did a quick stop at La Nop, followed by rides through downtown and back to riverside. As soon as someone posts up their pics, I'll repost here! Thanks again everyone!

Wednesday's workshop and movie night was also a great success. It was refreshing to see a lot of new faces, coming out despite the cold, proving there is a want for such options. For those who missed out, no worries we think this will become a staple Zombie event. A huge thanks to everyone who has mentioned our happenings in their blogs, including Jack, BikeJax, Tom P., Biggie Tea and Urban Jacksonville.

Tonight celebrates Midnight Mass' four year anniversary. For of those of you who aren't in the know, midnight mass is an urban bike ride that was started on a whim and has grown to become a weekly hang out bike ride. The meet up is Thursday nights at midnight at the Cummer Museum and involves stops at various local bars. In celebration of the rides' fourth year, we're going to have a shindig at Springfield's Shantytown Pub. Local psychobilly band (that never plays enough), Devil Runs the Truckstop, will be performing at 8pm along with elevated hip hop experience. Afterwards there'll be a ride out to the Cummer for the midnight ride. If you think you're not quite ready to brave a bike ride in tonight's freeze, come out to the earlier party at Shantytown and share drinks and music.

Workshops! Movies! Bike RIdes!

First off, I hope everyone who reads this had a chance to go to January's art walk. The skate demo and skateboard art was absolutely amazing, and it was inspiring to see so much potential in this city. And for those of you who would like to see a more permanent urban skate arena check out the Skateplaza of Springfield. This is something I think really needs to happen, last night proved there are people interested and that we just need to see some better outlets.

But back to bikes,
and.. WORKSHOPS!

there will be two open workshops this month,
Wednesday, January 14th 5:30- 7:30
and again
Wednesday, January 28th 5:30- 7:30

this will become a regular thing, and topics to cover will be a whole mess of bike maintenance necessities; from the intro of replacing a tube to that messy business of derailers and truing wheels.

now, this isn't too say that individuals aren't more than welcome to come in for one-on-one guided repairs. Joe in particular is a fan of these, and his personal schedule is looking like tuesday and thursdays 1-6, but call/email to confirm. and remember, we are a co-op meaning donations or the willingness to swap volunteer time or wanted materials is a crux to how we work.

On both Jan. 14th and Jan. 28th, after the workshops will be movie nights!! I hope you haven't forgotten! These are free all the time for the awesomness of sharing good fun and meeting new people. Movies begin at 8:30, and for the 14th we've got BMX Bandits.. for the 28th we've got Bomb It!

Tentative dates are either April 24-26 or May 1-3. Plan accordingly.

On January 23 through the 25, several of us will be heading to Atlanta to take part in Bike!Bike!, a regional gathering of bike shop members. Besides these dates, Zombie will have the following regular weekend hours: Friday afternoon, Saturday 1-5 and Sunday 1-5. Weekday hours will be a little more fluctuating, but count on someone being around tuesday and thursday afternoons.

Finally, look forward to Zombie Bikes hosting (what will start off as) a small zine distro. We've got some zines coming in, some racks need to be built and details need to be finished. But I'm hoping we will be able to pick up the radical literature outlet that was lost when heartworks and intertia closed their doors. If you write a zine, or know someone who does, again email us with the lowdown, we want to push good local stuff (and not just here, if you're local and you're good, we will support you when we go out of town for things such as bike!bike! and various other polo/alleycat/bike events).

the women's ride

There have been some questions as to why I would be co-hosting a women’s ride and I think it’s important that I clarify why such an event is important and why I am a part of it.

As a biker in both Jacksonville and Philadelphia, I have had to deal with a lot of intimidation. The fixed gear community is a male majority. Going to bike shops both here and in Philadelphia, I’ve had to deal with a lot of shit from bike mechanics deciding I didn’t know what I wanted. A couple examples from Philly, when I first went in to have my polo bike set up, thinking it would be better to get a ‘professional’ to install the braking system, I had to go in three times before it was done how I wanted it, because the guys didn’t think I knew what I was doing with my brake set up. It took a lot for me to even begin playing bicycle polo in such a decidedly male messenger town. Most weeks I was the only girl, and it was a balancing act trying to assert that no, I wasn’t there to hook up with a “hot” messenger, that I just wanted to learn, but at the same time not coming off as a “bitch” and proving I could play. It was frustrating, and at least once I almost quit, but I loved playing so I kept going.

I don’t want Jacksonville to be that male-dominated biking town (and I’m not saying that it is). I don’t want other girls who’re getting into biking to face the same sort of stumbling blocks. I want to see chicks on every level of the biking community. Because biking is fun, it’s liberating and it’s a great form of transportation. I’ve talked to a lot of people (not just girls) who have told me they don’t like doing the weekly Jax ride known as ‘midnight mass’ because they feel intimidated, because their bike isn’t “cool” enough, that they don’t feel comfortable in the mostly male, cliquish, environment. It’s become a somewhat macho thing.

Well Aimeee and I are establishing alternatives rides. We want everyone to feel included, with also a possibly more convenient time. The first step is going to be this women’s ride. We want to see every type of bike there, from cruiser to bmx. We want women to feel included, no judging, just fun.

After this ride there will be more, and not gender inclusive. This is just the beginning and we are looking forward to hosting a series of just fun, themed rides in the near future. So if you’re a boy, keep your eyes out; if you’re a girl who couldn’t make it to this one, keep aware. Jacksonville can be a sweet biking town with an inclusive bike community. But nothing happens overnight, and this is just a step, one we hope in the right direction.

Also, just a post note. I am not saying that midnight mass is a horrible ride, I’ve gone several times and it is fun. I apologize if this reads like I’m attacking anything/anyone, that is not my intention. For events/movements/etc. to be successful, one has to constantly question why, and improve upon things found lacking. There can be more than one ride; there can be more than one group.

This month has been pretty busy for us here at Zombie bikes. What with the Night Ride hosted by BikeJax, an amazing event Zombie was lucky enough to be a part of. A thousand cheers to Matt for hosting such a stellar success. It's hard work to organize this kind of event; one that brings together an array of artists, business owners, local craftsmen&women and bike enthusiasts and he deserves the biggest props. I regret that Zombie didn't get on the train earlier with helping plan and hope that we can be an even bigger part of Matt's next event.

Onto current events a la Zombie. We are working to get more concrete hours posted and will (all fingers crossed) have a regular schedule starting in November. We've hosted two movie nights this month; Pedal this past Wednesday and Quicksilver two weeks earlier. Both a success, although Pedal was made possible through thanks the help of Tom and his last minute projector grab. Movie nights will start to be a regular addition to our line up, every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, so keep an eye out. However, our biggest upcoming event is going to be a sweet art show hosted at the shop, which I'll post more details about soon.

Zombie bikes will be open tomorrow, but Sunday I think its safe to say we'll all be out on the Zombie Walk.

Zombie Meets the North Florida Bike Club

This past Tuesday, word out on the blogosphere (aka BikeJax) alerted me to a bicycle related planning meeting taking place, hosted by the North Florida Bike Club. Since its important Zombie make itself known to all parts of the bicycle community--especially when it relates to Jacksonville bike paths--I made sure to be in attendance.

Before I went in, my impression was a discussion focusing on what was being done to make Jacksonville safer for bikers, ie adding more bike lanes. Unfortunately, that wasn't exactly the case.

The two big headings for the evening were the program's long-range planning and their new safety campaign.

By "long range", the implication was to include paths and lanes to be done by 2035. The way they see it, in order for shit to get done, people need funds; in order to get this funding, they need to submit a plan. Plans that are still in the works and do not have a definitive timeline. The problem with directing all your energy on the long term planning are twofold: one, nothing was being mentioned about things being done now to effect transportation routes when biking is really getting into vogue and now would be a great time to act; two, by already having a list of things that are being, well, planned to be planned, the group is not allowing for a lot of flexibility to change direction later on. Once the infrastructure starts spending the allocated funds for whatever decided purpose, it will be a hell of a lot harder to stop and redirect. Which might not be that big of an issue if we were talking long range for commuters but sadly, the people they talked to and took census of (which by the demographic I met were not urban bikers, were not of a minority and were not of a younger crowd) wanted recreational, regional sites. Don't get me wrong, I love these kinds of trails, Philadelphia has a couple really great ones that will lead you to the different counties surrounding the city. They are beautiful and they are fun, but lets remember these kind of trails are built primarily with recreational use in mind. And when your thirty year plan (that wasn't available in an organized format) focuses on suburbia paths (the top two corridors being discussed are Vilano Bridge to Micklers Landing--Ponte Vedra--and Green Cove Springs to Black Creek Trail) you not only alienate a mass of city commuters, but also ignore citywide and national trends. Trends saying more people want to bike, but they just don't know how to make it work.

Which leads to the "new", "out of the box" safety campaign. First huge problem, one of the advertising representatives admitted she hadn't been on a bike since youth and the other said he was a mountain biker/trail user. Hmm. So the safety campaign they wish to enact rests on the tagline.. are you ready.. "Thanks for looking."

Seriously? Could we be more passive?

Or sexist, because of course that sells. One of the few posters shown was a girl walking backwards with arrows on her ass with the side note saying something like "Or you know maybe we could just look out a little more."

I raised my hand at this point and asked why we couldn't be more aggressive with slogans focusing on our right to be on the road. Since a lot of drivers (including some coppers) still have the misconception that road bikes, you know, don't belong on the road. The advertising rep wasn't too happy with criticism, and I wasn't the only one showing it. Of course, this is when what is beautiful about these kind of events started happening. Other people shared their criticism and suggestions, and while the rep disdainfully shot them all down, I had a bit of change in thought direction.

Someone else brought up the idea that these kind of campaigns are negative in that they give out the impression that there's something inherently dangerous in biking. And I realized this. is. so. true. I think even I shared that misconception before, especially in Philly. When you aren't on a bike, zipping through traffic looks ten times more hazerdous than it really is. When all you hear about biking is when a biker gets hit or the whole New York critical mass fiasco, of course you're going to get a negative impression on the whole activity. And this line of thought comes directly back to what Zombie Bikes is all about; when all you remember is fucking with your rear derailler for two hours, or that time you had to change your tube three times in one day because no one ever really showed you how, of course you're going to be reluctant about biking. We're busy trying to help people learn how to fix their bikes, but maybe we need to do more.

Zombie will do what it can to support NFBC's campaign because after all it comes down to solidarity, but meanwhile we're going to run a corresponding campaign. One that really focuses on why you should bike. I'm thinking t-shirts, wheatpasting and some good ole' tables with flyers in Five points, Riverside, San Marco and Springfield. Cheap, starter bikes can be found in thrift stores or Brooklyn can hook you up. You don't know much about bikes? We can help you learn some basic mechanics. You worried about riding some of the streets? We can do more organized rides, during the day incorparting more than just your usual bike crowd. This will obviously be a multi-month campaign. But everything starts somewhere, and I think this is something Zombie will be attacking full force.

Wanted: Artist!

For those who aren't aware, the warehouse complex housing Zombie Bikes also hosts two other independent shops: Royal Treatment Records--run by Tough Junkie, Ian/Triclops and Big Dunn--and Burro Bags--run by Chris and Matt. Recently, these two groups came together and purchased a screenprinting outfit and have since been pretty busy making some sweet shirts. Now naturally, given their proximity, Zombie would be fool not to take advantage of this amazing set up. We are eager to get shirts printed out in the next couple weeks, only we'd love some outside input. So long story short, we are in the need of an artist who wants to see their image out on the Jax streets and is happy with being paid for their talent in the form of a couple of shirts and Zombie love. The shirts will be sold for $5-7 with all proceeds going back to Zombie.

Also, Sundays are Potluck'd Polo Nights, come out and have fun!

Sorry we've been slacking with keeping an updated online account of our happenings at Zombie Bikes. We took a step back, looked at what our neighbors at Burro were doing, and decided to mimic them with starting our own Blogger account. Easy to both update and access--and free to use--we hope this will work out better than our old website.

We get a lot of questions about Zombie, and I'm hoping we were able to answer the majority of them on the right. As far as the schedule goes for this weekend:
